Hey everybody.
This post is probably going to annoy some people here but here it goes anyway. 
I am a complete noob when it comes to this sort of thing and i was hoping that somebody (preferably CDN, or with knowledge of ontario canada) could just start me off with some really basic links. just googling up and reading message boards still hasent really help me exactly how everything works.
I know that they sell a couple types of FTA recievers (incld: captiveworks 700s, nfusion and viewsat max hd amoung otehrs) and that it can be use to "test".
I have an old direct tv set up including reciver and satalite. I don't know exactly what model it is yet, But I thought now would be a good time to start researching.
I love hobbies like this, modding my xbox, computer, phone, etc so i am really excited about getting into the comunity.
any helpful links or suggestions would be great

Hello and welcome to ABA! Try looking through the "receiver reviews" below, you can get a pretty good idea about each one and hear the different points of view. That will help you decide which one will best suit you. I think you only need to worry about where to point your dish and which sats you want to pick up. Good luck, we are glad to have you here!

hello, welcome to abadss, the best fta site on the net!!
this is much more than just a place to get files. it is a community with dedicated members,
forums for just about anything, social groups, your own profile page, access to a weekly poker game,
and too much more to list.
make ABADSS your first stop for everything fta and you will be rewarded with much more.
reading is the best way to learn, use the search option to find posts related to your specific problem.
if you still need help post a question in the proper forum.
helpful hints:
* read and understand the site rules to guide you through our many forums.
* hard reboot with the switch on back of your receiver solves many minor issues.
* before you unplug your receiver, or disconnect any connection including the
switch or lnb ALWAYS REMEMBER to turn the receiver off using the switch on back of the receiver.
you could burn up your switch or mess up your settings if you dont.
* post your type of receiver, your antenna settings, and explain your problem well to receive the best help.
* you need to upgrade your membership to access the files section on this site. this can be done by
clicking upgrade membership at the top of the page. it is free to join the site, ask questions and receive help.
you can upgrade at any time.
* hijacking threads is confusing and not wanted here at abadss. see the site rules to understand
better about hijacking threads. to avoid this start your own thread in the proper forum
if you have any questions.
* this is an informative and friendly site devoted to the fta hobby. the members
and moderators will be glad to help in any way they can.

Thanks for al the helpful links. It has given me lots to read today and i am starting to get a picture of how this is going to work..
for now i just called home and asked for some specs on the dish i already have
it is a (roughly) 24" direct TV rca with a single LBD with this part number written on it
TCE stock number : 244492
just wondering if this will be compatible or will i need to buy something else. keep in mind right now my un educated guess at a receiver is looking like a captive works 700s
thanks again guys. (i'm still reading the back logs)
