The PGM you are talking about is an image format hence the "256 levels of gray". File extension mean nothing. You could release the bins as .jpg and it wouldn't matter.

.PGM files can also be opened in Linux. but I'm sure you know that....

Alright here's some more knowledge for you so pay attention. Get yourself a "hex editor". Open up a .pgm file and you will discover it is in ASCII code....you do know what that is right?

  1. An ASCII text representation (which is extremely verbose).

    Please Note:
  2. For PGM files, when stored in the ASCII representation, there is a limit of 256 levels of gray.
P.S When/if we come back up I'll rename a .pgm file to a .jpg and you can load it in your Viewsat....as long as you're so confident that it doesn't matter.

Hex Editors manipulate binary files. So you are basically saying the .pgm is a binary file.

So your theory that .pgm is limiting Viewsat is total bs. Sonicview and Viewsat both use binary.

Of course its a binary file I never said it wasn't. However its written in a .pgm file format. That uses a specific program(s) to work with it. I guess I don't understand what part of "PGM files, when stored in the ASCII respresentation, there is a limit of 256 levels of gray" that you don't understand?

By me saying or not saying that a .pgm file is a binary file...how is that proving any theory??? I don't unerstand why you insist on arguing everything? Do you do this at your job too? I'm curious?

I'd love to see you change the extension on a .pgm file to a .jpg and load it up....post back your results! You don't even need a working .pgm to do that. Just get yourself a .pgm file change the extension to .jpg ('cause it doesn't matter as you said earlier) and post your findings on it. I want screen shots too to prove that you actually loaded it....

Sorry but once again I am done with you....you seem to want nothing more then to argue on here. I come on here to find out information and share information...if thats not what you're hear for maybe you need another hobby?

Lets discuss something you DO know (maybe). I have some fresh MACS from Comcast in my area in case you ever decide to get out of the '80's and run a modded modem. Hell I even got a business class one.....now HERE'S something you might understand:

00:22:2D:XX:XX:XX d11_m_smc8014wgccr_bciwidebandstarter_c05.cm

(Docsis 1.1 running an SMC 8014 business modem. Business class account static i.p wideband starter tier 12MB/2MB up. Up to 5 MACS on that config file.)

P.S I would of left you the whole MAC but I just don't trust you.....

Re: Anyone considering Iks, read and keep yourself informed!!

I took the liberty of opening up a .pgm file for mr hawkeyi in a hex editor. Boy if that doesn't look like ASCII code then I don't know what is. Now I'm no coder but I do know that certain programs are used to work with certain file extensions.....to say you can load a .jpg file on a Viewsat receiver instead of a .pgm....well thats just absurd. Mr. hawkeyi do you know that the new puff lzma files by jvvh and team puff used winzip? Yes they did and how do I know that...because fwank was kind enough to post the source code for their work to let those interested modify their own bins. The guys (meaning coders) use programs that you would have no idea can be used for their work.....

Sorry Tbass didn't mean to jack your thread....I was only responding to another members inquiry about why Vs was going down so much and Sv was staying up. This is it for me on the coding topic....hawekeyi is only here to cause problems and every time he sees one of my posts he insists on posting back something negative....whether it has anything to do with the topic at hand or not. The dude needs to find a new hobby in my opinion.....

Again my apologies didn't mean to jack your thread.

Don't worry about it. the main thing is, lets not fight on here!!! Lets all be friends ok!!! But hey. What you guys had to say was interesting. You guys know by far a lot more then me about all that codeing. Start another thread. I'm for sure to follow it if you guys do.

Tbass in my opinion, you're theory is dead on. Makers can say anything they want and its up to you to buy into or not. I for one have not ran out and bought any of this mickey mouse hardware. Thats the way it goes sometimes, from the top to the bottom. Never know what tomorrow will bring in this hobby.
