Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
Ok all. I have a decision to be making here really soon. I 'm looking for anyone living in the Kissimmee,Fl. area or Plano, Tx. area. Me and the wife have agreed to move with in the next year as soon as i finish this bachelor degree. Now the question is which one would better. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of one or the other. I am in the electrical engineering field and the wife is a registered Nurse. I was told that Texas was a better place for me(technology) and that my wife would do good considering Texas is a retirement state just like Florida due to the heat. So im just looking for some input here, just in case there are some factors that i missed or didnt consider. We do have two kids(11 and 6) and possibly my mom and here husband(waste of a scrotum), but thats another thread. We will be looking for home in the 350k range maybe 3k-4k sq ft. Will do upper 2k sq ft if I can get 1-2 acers of land. Will appreciate any feedback.

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
Hmmm....just curious how you narrowed it down to those two areas, was it an economical business choice or family, friends, etc.??
Sorry I can't give you an experienced opinion....but I'm sure you'll get some great feed back. Good luck to you!!

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
REASONS.
We both wanted to move south.
Texas
I picked Texas because my internet research says its racked 2-3 best places for technology based jobs. Two major cities(didnt want to live in the sticks and big cities pay more) are Dallas and Houston. Don't want to live in the city just near one. Houston was too close to the water for me (huricanes)so that leaves Dallas area. Not to mention, you can get more bang for your housing buck in Taxas(3500sq ft for 200k-300k).
>
Florida
She want Florida because a lot of her family is their and she loved visiting Florida as a child and always wanted to move their. She has family in Miami. Ft Laud., Orlando(Kissimmee) and Tampa. Personally, they are all to close to the water for me, but Kissimmee(Orlando area) is dead center, as far from the edges as possible. The market is good for her but just OK for my field and I will be the primary money maker.
>
Conclusion
My first concern is the well being of the family(better job market, money/bigger house/more comfortable living) but she really wants to go to Florida. I told her that we will do FL. if we can prove that we can be just as comfortable there as we would in Texas. Im trying to be fair, and she said that she would go where ever I chose but would prefer FL. And if I had to choose a natural disaster, it would be wind and debris (tornado), than wind, debris and water(hurricane).

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
Great, thanks for sharing the reasons. I knew a family that loved Austin, TX. I believe Applied Materials and a few large companies are doing business there. Sounds like you've done your homework!!
Good luck and keep us updated.

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
thanks Peggy Ill look into Austin.......You know something I havnt heard about is hurricane Katrina effects on this area if any. What I mean is,....i heard that a lot of people left Louisiana and came to Texas. Has this impacted the state any, has it changed things like, population issues, crime, work...etc....I wonder. They say when natural disaster hits an area, the people leave and only the people that had something really go back, and the ones with nothing see this as a chance to move some where else. I dont want to sound like a jerk but I'm just trying to consider as much as I can.....the big and the small things. Anyone have any comments/insight on this too.

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
Having been born in, and lived most of my life in San Antonio, TX gets my vote. However, similar to yourself, my wife and I followed work which ultimately led us to GA., I am an electrician. All of my wifes family is in TX, I have none much to speak of, but several lifelong friends back in TX. I am now looking to take a pay cut in order to move back. Although she would never tell me she regrets moving to GA, I can here the longing in her voice as she talks to her family on the phone. I would not have said this a few years ago, but money is not everything. Family and true friends can not be bought. Just my two cents for what it's worth. Good luck to ya

Being born and raised in N. Texas Plano is awesome, a great school system and plenty of parks within the city limits. The cost of living is pretty cheap compared to E.Coast (DC Area) If you are looking for land at 350K you should look at NW Fort Worth (specifically Haslet, TX) its about 45 min commute to Dallas (where you would more than likely work) but you do get a big bang for your buck out there. The wife can probably get a job down in Fort Worth about 30 min drive (John Peter Smith, Cook Children, Harris, All Saints) just to name a few hospitals. The school system (NWISD) is great they look after the kids and actually teach them something other than teaching to the TAKS. Thanks to the Bartlett Shale and the school district owning some land that has Natural gas being pumped out of it they got a lot of extra money to spend.
There's my 2 cents worth on NW Fort Worth.

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
I live in Florida, right on the Gulf Coast, about 1 mile from the actual water. I am 90 miles north of Tampa.
I look at it this way... you can be anywhere, and if it is meant to be, disaster will strike.
You can not go through life being afraid. Being cautious, yes, taking care of your Family, yes, but to deny your and your Family something because you are afraid of hurricanes or earthquakes or whatever reason is not right. You could be in a car crash tomorrow or drop dead of an aneurysm...
Move where you and your Family will be happiest.
... just my 2 cents!!

they are begging for nurses all over fl. with the slump in houseing sales an repoes, you have a larg sellection of homes here in fl, an with the military bases all around fl, that base there pay scale out of atlanta. as for hurricanes in my opinion its not as as bad as a snow storm.( but i hate snow) and tornado alley speaks for it's self

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
I live in Dallas and work just outside of Plano in Richardson. There is a lot of technology here, but I think the job market is going to be tough for you during this economic slowdown. I think no matter where you end up now, your wife is going to be the bread winner until the economy picks up. In my opinion, I would suggest moving to Florida and consider Plano a year or two down the road. Let your wife enjoy her family. Trust me, you will be a lot happier.

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
i live right up the road from plano. katrina had things backed up for a while there but things are pretty much back to normal now. the unemployment rate in texas is better than in most states, but if you change a job right now ANYWHERE your taking a chance. about the worst thing that happens in this part of texas is storms and tornado's. we get some "cold" weather but not much to speak of.

Thanks assman(lol), but im trying to move away form the cold...this is the original reason we wanted to move and why the issue even came up. Im currently in NW Indiana and I love the snow....but dont like cold weather for 7-9months out of the year. I like to do outdoor activities and enjoy driveing with a t-shirt on and the windows down. Also my mom is reacting worse and worse to the cold seasons. Not to mention the wifes parents are only here because of her and the grand kids. Their plan was to all move to Florida after my wife graduated with her RN, But we met and I stopped going to school because we couldnt both go to school at the same time. Now shes finished and its my turn. But her parents still want to move to Florida. Man I hope if we move to TX, that they dont follow us. I love her mom but she calles like 4-6 a day(no exaggeration) and is here 3-4 days a week. lol. She leaves and calls like 20 minutes later...."So.....what are the kids doing?" Drives me crazy.

what do you consider cold............in the fall (october) we get in the lower-mid 50's and winters hit like 20's with a wind chill of single digits. It cant get that bad. I wear shorts and tshirts untill about 55-52degrees.

Re: Kissimmee,Fl. or Plano,Tx.
I know this will not help you make your choice..but... I lived in Kissimmee for 8 months while doing construction after a Hurricane hit. I loved the place and wished I stayed there. weather was awesome and my seasonal alergies were non-existence. The people I meet there were great (except for the Disney tourist) and there's endless things to do with your spare time. The only complaint I have is that it seems the insurance rates are high in Florida.
On a side note...The company I worked for then is now in Austin,Tx doing the same thing ( hurricane damage repair ). They tell me the weather is the same but the winter seemed colder. If it were me I would hit Florida and Kissimmee is a great spot if you love Fishing like I do.
