Re: FTA internet

I'm told that some companies like Hughes Sat internet and others point to telesat Anik F-2 Sat @111.1 degrees west. With a Sat modem and I guess some software, you can get internet. Been doing some reading on this but don't know or understand enough yet.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: FTA internet

Well, if you think about it...

You can only receive the internet blocks of data with a satellite and computer with a sat modem. You still have to upload with a dialup connection. Keyboarding and "clicks", any inputting has to be sent (uploaded). Currently (unless you are at NASA) there is no way to transmit up to the satellites to do something like satellite-only-internet.

I guess when you referred to "FTA internet", you meant like a free internet service via satellite. You may have to wait quite a while for that.

Hope This Helps !!

Re: FTA internet

I know DN has satelite internet but it is not cheap! I used to have Comcast internet but the price went up so much that I have to switch to Wow $52/ month. Just purchased a laptop, testing out some neighbor open wifi. If things are okay, I am going to disconnect my ISP to save around $50/month. I've already saved $ on Comcast cable by switch to FTA.

Re: FTA internet

Satellite two way communications have been going on since Sat was invented. Satellite phone is a good example. Its just that NO Free To Air at this time. Way too expensive to be FREE. Someday maybe LOL!!

Thank you for the information. Do I need any special hardware for my PC, such as cards or anything else, or do I only need the "linksys wireless g gateway"?. I am very very new to Wifi and do not know much about it. Thanks again.

Re: FTA internet

Yeah I have had no problems with the Linksys.I simply used the netgear usb adapter for the other connection. It is a simple plug and play installation and you can pick these up on ebay for less than twenty bucks including shipping for a new one. good luck

Hi restoreancient, are you saying that all I need is a "netgear usb adapter with a linksys component and you are able to receive signal without the need to subscribe to some special internet service?. I am looking at a "Linksys compact wireless usb network adapter with speed booster", would that work with the netgear usb adapter?. Also is there a specific model of netgear usb adapter used?. Well I guest that is enough questions for right now, LOL. Thanks again.

Re: FTA internet

One of my fellow workers said that I might need a router to make this usb network adapter work. Is this router used together with a netgear usb adapter. I have read some about the netgear usb adapter and it resembles the Linksys compact wireless usb network adapter that I was looking at, do these two item basically have the same function?. Thanks again

Re: FTA internet

routers are used to give you a communications channel a IP address,,,,,Are you going to use the wirelees usb ,on your Laptop,,,IF so you could get free internet at universities ,,bussiness plazas,,and even MC Donalds,,,,Some cities send out a wireless signal for up to 10 miles ,,but you have to regeister with them,,they dont charge ,,but they do want to know who you are,,,,,Some neighboors also have their wireless networks set up by default and dont remember to encrypt or assign a key to their network ...so from their you could get free internet without going through a provider

Re: FTA internet

you can buy any wireless adapter brand to pick up the wireless signal near to it by doing search for wireless network as long as the wireless routers are not encrypted then you are ok to use there wireless network router without the key,if they are encrypted you need to enter the key only the first time to access to it.

people who turn on security and encrypt their network usually change their keys on a regular basis
