who using linux talk here
hey there guys i was always wondering who uses what as in linux i am using mandriva 2008.1 spring power pack love it .. i also have ordered the disk linux mce which i am going to run as a stand alone media center .. and my server is running red hat ..
just wondering hopefully i am not the only one running linux ..
by the way if you have really good computer skills on windows the change to linux would not be to hard you should try it my choices are
mandriva 2008.1 spring
unbunto 2008
suse 10.3
media center linux o/s
linux mce
mythbuntu
now there are tons of linux o/s and they are almost all free you have to do a bit of work with codecs and installing software but once you get the hang of it .. you will be amazed on what you can do
oh ya it is faster than any windows o/s that you can get and more free software ..

How ever I am a noob on the linux kernel, so I am trying to figure out the who what when where and why's of this system..
Any suggestions on reference material available on the web would be appreciated...
I love learning, and would soak the material like a sponge
Thanks in Advance

Re: who using linux talk here
i also run ubuntu on my desktop, red hat enterprise on my work servers and debian on my utility machine that does email and some web sites.
i have tried most flavors and i find that each is best at certain things. ubuntu seems to like the gnome desktop as debian works best with KDE. debian stable is easy to maintain from a server standpoint and not that many updates.
i find that i can do most things on linux that i can do on my windows machine (laptop) but much faster. my wife has vista but hates it, its a dual core 64 bit machine and is slower than sh**.
messing with the kernel is not required but good if you know what your doing. you have to understand the pros and cons of adding devices to the kernel vs using modules (mod conf). you can really hose things up if you are not very familiar with the kernel modules and other features so unless required, dont go there.
the rest is pidgon for IM, xchat for irc, firefox for web, mplayer for music, a variety of cd readers and writers, openoffice for files and pdf, acrobat for the usual stuff.
as i said, i can do about everything on linux.

Re: who using linux talk here
Either way you look at it, if you fix computers as a side project like myself...both can piss you off very easily. Both have there pros and cons i guess. Just don't ever use Internet Explorer as a browser...especially when shopping online.

Re: who using linux talk here
Newer kernels generally offer the ability to talk to more types of hardware (that is, they have more device drivers), they can have better process management, they can run faster than the older versions, they could be more stable than the older versions, and they fix silly bugs in the older versions. Most people upgrade kernels because they want the device drivers and the bug fixes.
they also can give you certain pathches that will help you you can look in the config in file and see what hardware is supported in the kernel ..basically if you have a problem with some hardware and there is a releasse of a new kernel before you install it you can go and find out if it is going to have anything that is going to improve you system ..
some problems are caused by the kernels the other day i upgraded to a different nvidia kernel and it gave me tons of problems with my 8800gt then new kernel would not start and gave me a error on my video ..
then when logged out and tried to startx back in would not do it .. had to go into consol and redo video to a standard card to get into ..
so the short and long of it is do alot of reading when you want to upgrade your linux as it can give you more problems than it is worth ..
if it aint broke don't fix it ..hopefully this helps this is just a small note to let you know whata kernel somewhat does
like the updates for windows basically ..

Re: who using linux talk here
tomcat is very correct on the kernel issue. when i referenced it above i was talking about downloading the kernel source and using make menuconfig to actually select what modules you build in the kernel, like video drivers and ethernet cards, and taking out what you dont want to make it smaller and faster. as tom says, this for the most part does not buy you a lot if your an average desktop user. just use the stock kernel and use the update tools to keep it current.
it might be usefull to set up a linux help section here for ppl that want to try it and we can help you get it going. like most of the folks using linux i have tried most all the popular flavors.
