Hello,
Hello, this is my introduction I guess. I'm new to all this, was pointed towards free-to-air and programmable receivers by a friend.
I'm new to all this, like I said, so please bear with me if I ask tired and tedious questions. I've sifted through the site and gleaned a lot of information, but I still need help with equipment and what have you.
I'm hoping to get a receiver and a dish hooked up and running soon, funds permitting. I think I can get an old Primestar dish, and should have no problem coming up with a DTV dish. I also purchased a Samsung SIR-4040 Tivo DVR that at a yard sale that *was* a Dtv system.
Is this hardware any good for anything? I saw it and the price was a five spot, so I figured at the LEAST I had a $5 40 gig hd for my next computer.
I run linux on my home system, and am an avid technology fan. Picking up satelite feeds would be an awesome addition to my arm's length long list of hobbies.
Thanks for your help guys, and also, since I am a tightwad usually in a tight spot what are your guys' reccomendations for a barebones, budget, easy-for-a-goof-ball to use set up?
I heard of autorolling .bins (bins I believe are the keys to private satelites?), someone told me you hit the channel you want, and a string of numbers goes across the screen and after some time you get sound, then picture then you are set. What kind of set up is that?

Re: Hello,
Great to have you join us here at ABA. You will find the greatest help right here. Take a look here at this link. It is members giving reviews on different STB makes...
Receiver Reviews - ABA DSS - Free to Air Satellite TV Community
Some of the DTV dishes will work. I would suggest the single eye LNB, the tripple eye that DTV uses is a pain in the a$$ to use for charlie (DISH NETWORK). If you look around, you can find charlie dishes for free. When subscribers move, they leave the dish, per charlie instuctions, so pick one up this way, get the 18" dish with a DP LNB. These work great. I really like the Sonicvie lineup in the STB's. They are at the top with support and new STB's on the market. Take a look at the SV-360 Premier with a single tuner PVR for recording, and the SV-360 Elite with dual tuners for recording one channel and watching another. If you are into HD (High Definition), check out the SV-8000, best on the market, my opinion. Also, check out our VIP membership, this will get you into the download section where we keep all our tested and safe files. Click on my sig (Be a VIP member) and take a look. You will be glad you did...

Re: Hello,
hello, welcome to abadss, the best fta site on the net!!
this is much more than just a place to get files. it is a community with dedicated members,
forums for just about anything, social groups, your own profile page, access to a weekly poker game,
and too much more to list.
make ABADSS your first stop for everything fta and you will be rewarded with much more.
reading is the best way to learn, use the search option to find posts related to your specific problem.
if you still need help post a question in the proper forum.
helpful hints:
* read and understand the site rules to guide you through our many forums.
* hard reboot with the switch on back of your receiver solves many minor issues.
* before you unplug your receiver, or disconnect any connection including the
switch or lnb ALWAYS REMEMBER to turn the receiver off using the switch on back of the receiver.
you could burn up your switch or mess up your settings if you dont.
* post your type of receiver, your antenna settings, and explain your problem well to receive the best help.
* you need to upgrade your membership to access the files section on this site. this can be done by
clicking upgrade membership at the top of the page. it is free to join the site, ask questions and receive help.
you can upgrade at any time.
* hijacking threads is confusing and not wanted here at abadss. see the site rules to understand
better about hijacking threads. to avoid this start your own thread in the proper forum
if you have any questions.
* this is an informative and friendly site devoted to the fta hobby. the members
and moderators will be glad to help in any way they can.
enjoy the forums and come back often!
