Re: dream linux
so get this...i'm an electrical engineer who specializes in hardware (i've ran from software for YEARS).
I'd love to try Linux, but don't know the first thing about it. Which Linux programs have had good testing results and which ones would you recommend? I absolutely hate windows (ergo, i hate software) and have been looking to switch. is it network friendly, etc?
** i don't mean to hijack...this struck a chord with me **

Re: dream linux
this is no a hijack i am talking about it here so you are good bud .. if you are new i would try madriva 2008.1 spring edition it is very nice .. easy to install now or ubuntu 2008 they also have a open suse11 it is ok but really if you can get ahold of a mandriva 2008.1 spring edition power pack for free that would be the best comes with all the software and codecs installed +drivers for most hardware ..

Re: dream linux
I would run Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Extremely easy to use. Takes some getting used to, but once you do it is well worth your time. Just remember that quickbooks will not run on linux or mac. I have tried using wine but no go. It will work with virtualbox.

i've got windows XP on my PC, using the master hdd. i have a slave hdd for my music. i'm more than willing to install madriva 2008.1 spring edition power pack.
I'm using firefox for my browser, openoffice for my apps and that's pretty much all i'm using it for. mainly for the internet, honestly.
i would be willing to load the madriva if i can find a little install support...know what i can find that?

Re: dream linux
One thing you are going to have to do is get a is burner. Free Software Downloads and Reviews - Download.com will have one. Then you will run the CD or DVD from startup and it will step you by.

Re: dream linux
well, you guys are saying Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and madriva are both good. I don't know enough about Linux to make an educated decision.
I can get a free Ubunto 8.04 Hardy Heron download from their website, but would like to download Madriva if possible.
My only issue is how to install a new o/s with xp currently installed?

Re: dream linux
Ubuntu is extremely easy to use and install. Download it burn it to a cd and load it in. It has a step by step install. You can use a dual boot(Ubuntu & Windows). Ubuntu will do this for you. Just when asked the split them both 50/50. Extremely easy.

Re: dream linux
Ubuntu is a Live CD. So you can try it out on you computer before you install. Granted that it runs quite a bit slower but it will give you a idea. I would recommend.

Re: dream linux
if you want to run linux and windows what you have to do is watch when it gets to the end of the install what you are going to do is look it will ask you where you want to load the grub loader .. when you do what you are going to do is do it on the mbr (master boot record ) then after it does that you can change what ever you want to load first change the default .. it will count down and load in what ever default you decide ..
now if you have problem windows will not boot again .. but you can fix easily
to fix windows boot record for xp
put it xp disk and boot up then before the installation you will see repair then it will take you to a screen to repai 1 for windows default then if you have a password enter it
then on the command prompt oline you will type this exactly
fixmbr (then hit enter)
next type this
boot fix(hit enter )
type exit and take out the disk and restart and you o/s will be back..
if you are using vista
put in the disk and then next it will ask you to install DO NOT in the bottom left you will see repair hit that then you will get a screen to load drivers just hit next then hit commant prompt in the selection on the next page
here you will type this
bootrec /fixmbr (then hit enter )
bootrec /bootfix (then hit enter )
type exit hit restart and take out disk and you are back to vista ..
this is if you have problems or do not want linux any more

Re: dream linux
Check out DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. it should help you on your pick. You can go to booksamillion or any bookstore and get a book pertaining to a certain distro and they come with the boot cd along with step by step instructions. Running linux will take a little getting used, but I would let that stop you.

Re: dream linux
One thing about linux is that it can make a very slow windows computer fast. No viruses and extremely stable. Mac is built on a Linux kernel. Check out OpenSUSE, OpenSolaris, And Kubutnu along with Ubuntu.

Re: dream linux
how many different Linux o/s's are out there? are there so many because it's open source coding?
I'm stoked to drop Vista (and microsoft all together) and give Ubuntu a try. I've got the latest Ubuntu coming in the mail on CD so i'm pumped to try it out!
Thanks for your help guys...I'll probably get anxious and just download the program from the website instead of waiting for shipping.
I'll keep you posted with my new findings. Thanks again!

Re: dream linux
Many. Some are commercially backed and some are personally built. Let me know if you need any help. Check out Ubuntuforums.com. I have received a lot of help there.
