• Liberty Media's 3Q09 financial results show Liberty Interactive group's revenue up 2% totaling $1.8 billion. Liberty Capital group's revenue down 22% to $171 million and Liberty Entertainment group's revenue increased 2% to $369 million. QVC's 3Q revenue increased 2% to $1.7 billion and adjusted OIBDA increased 10% to $343 million. Starz Entertainment's revenue increased 8% to $301 million and adjusted OIBDA increased 19% to $93 million. Overall, Liberty saw profits increase 42% across all three of its units.
• EchoStar reported net profit of $294 million with earnings per share equaling $3.45 despite a 21.6% decrease in revenue totaling $483 million in its 3Q09 report. The set-top box provider said the 14% decline in set-top box unit sales contributed to the decline in revenue.
• TriMas Corp reported net sales of $203.7 million, a decrease of more than 21% in its 3Q09 financial results. The company’s income from continuing operations decreased 19.2% to $6.5 million, or $0.19 diluted earnings per share. Additionally, TriMas has $43.4 million in free cash flow and decreased its total indebtedness by $22 million.
• Stratos Global Communications reported a 4.8% decline in revenues totaling $160.1 million in its 3Q09 financial announcement. Net earnings for the third quarter were $8.0 million. Cash flow from operations (including working capital changes) totaled $13.8 million.•

Never let it be said that Charlie Ergen doesn’t know how to please a crowd. While Wall Street analysts were mixed on the DISH Network’s 3Q09 report (wrote Bernstein Research’s Craig Moffett: “Dish Network: Regaining Altitude... but at What Cost?”), investors were delirious as CEO Ergen announced a special dividend of $2 per share.

Ergen cited improving market conditions and increased confidence for the one-time bonus.

DISH also pleased the crowd with a total gain of 241k subscribers ... far above what most of Wall Street had projected. On the downside, those new subs came at a cost as higher expenses and lower revenues drove profit to a 3Q 12.3% decline. Wrote Moffett on the results: “Subscriber growth was a clear beat (on expectations), and so was the all-important churn metric... but ARPU growth was an almost equally large miss. Margins, too, were poor, even after accounting for the "negative" impact of all those additional subscribers. And earnings were a miss even after accounting for incremental TiVO litigation expense.”

But overall, the markets were delighted as DISH closed the day up 5.17% at $20.14.•

DISH Corporation Reports Third Quarter 2009 Financial Results


ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DISH Corporation (Nasdaq: DISH) today reported total revenue of $2.892 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2009, a 1.5 percent decrease compared with $2.937 billion for the corresponding period in 2008.


Net income attributable to common shareholders totaled $81 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2009, compared with $92 million during the corresponding period in 2008. Basic earnings per share were $0.18 for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2009, compared with basic earnings per share of $0.20 during the corresponding period in 2008.


DISH gained approximately 241,000 net subscribers during the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2009, ending the quarter with approximately 13.851 million subscribers.
